There are various ways in which you can prepare khichdi, in fact it is one of the few dishes with which you can experiment a lot. Each home has its own variation of preparing this dish. By using a few everyday ingredients, we can prepare this dish in no time. It is also a perfect lunch box dish for your kids. So without delaying, let us see how we can prepare this dish at home. 

Ingredients to prepare Masala Khichdi Recipe : 

  • Rice : 1 cup
  • Tur dal : 1/4 cup
  • Moong dal : 2 tbsps
  • Green gram dal : 2 tbsps
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Onion : 1 
  • Tomato : 1
  • Green chillies : 3
  • Ginger : 1/2 
  • Garlic cloves : 3
  • Carrot : 1
  • Potato : 1
  • Green peas : fistful
  • Salt : to taste
  • Water : 3 cups

For tempering : 

  •   Oil : 2 tbsps 
  •   Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
  •   Cinnamon stick : 1
  •   Bay leaf : 1
  •   Cloves : 5
  •   Cardamom : 1
  •   Cloves : 4
  •   Star anise:  1
  •   Curry leaves : 1 

Masala Khichdi Recipe : 

Preparation Time : 10 mins 

Cook : 30 mins 

Serves : 5 people

How to prepare Masala Khichdi Recipe : 

 

Step 1 : Take rice, wash it and drain properly, now do the same with dal, and put it aside.

Step 2 : Take a big vessel, put some oil in it, let it heat up, now add cumin seeds and let it cook. Add the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, star anise and bay leaf.

Step 4 : Now add curry leaves, ginger garlic paste, green chillies and Coriander stems. Now fry them for the next 2-3 mins.

Step 5 : Now add turmeric powder, salt and onion and saute them for 3-5 mins.

Step 6 : Add chopped potatoes, green peas and carrots to the vessel and stir it for 8-10 mins.   

Step 7 : Now add water and let it boil for 5 mins. You can also taste the water and see if it is salty or not. 

Step 8 : Once the water is boiled, add washed rice and dal to it. You can also add coriander stems on it. 

Step 9 : Now close the lid and let it cook for 10-15 mins, until all the excess water is absorbed. 

Step 10 : Empty the vessel in a big bowl and serve to your friends and family with raita or pickles. 

 

Some Useful Tips : 

 

  • You can add 5 cups of water if you want your khichdi to be soft. 

 

  • The use of chillies is optional. 

 

  • The coriander leaves that we add in this dish, helps to bring more aroma and flavor to this dish.
